When your backyard is regularly referred to as the “wet coast” you quickly begin to understand the value of quality rain gear. Having the right gear can turn what could seem like a miserable day in the mountains to most, into a grand adventure. 

Over the last few weeks I’ve been testing out the Trollveggen GTX Pro Jacket from Norrona and it definitely fits the bill. Designed in Norway, The Trollveggen line is durable enough to withstand the rugged Coast Mountain terrain while still maintaining flexibility for a comfortable fit and effortless movement through technical pitches.

I’ve tested a few GORE-TEX products over the years with varying levels of protection but the 70D GORE-TEX pro fabric used in the Trollveggen line was unmatched and kept me completely dry, even in the wettest conditions. 

GORE-TEX fabric isn’t known for it’s breathability but, with the long two-way zippers under the arms and Norrona’s unique zipper system in the front I had great ventilation. 

If you’re not familiar with it, Norrona jackets feature a double zipper in the front with a mesh panel (fondly referred to as the “screen door”) that allows extra airflow so you can dump some heat during those harder climbs without layering down or having your jacket double as a cape.

Alpine adventures seem to be synonymous with wild winds here in BC. Finding a jacket that fits a helmet comfortably while still fitting snug around your face can be a challenge, but the cut of the storm hood on the Trollveggen managed to check both these boxes.

The Trollveggan was introduced in 1977 as Europe’s first GORE-TEX jacket; while testing this jacket it was clear that it was built with over 40 years of innovation. From the durability and ventilation to the small details in the design like the fit of the storm hood, the extra long cuffs and the high chest pockets for harness compatibility.  

Norrona’s history for making durable outdoor gear can be traced back to 1929 when Norwegian outdoor enthusiast Jørgen Jørgensen began his mission to create the ultimate performance products. 

Today, four generations later the brand remains family owned and run, with the same commitment to innovation and performance. 

The Trollveggen may be Norrona’s flagship jacket but since 1977 the brand has expanded with different lines for every type of adventurer. Some of my other favourites are the Lofoten line for Snowboarding, and the Lyngen for light-weight insulation for ski touring split boarding and hiking.

Aside from Norrona’s commitment to innovation, one of the other huge draws for me is their commitment to nature. Norrona understands that “without nature, there is no us”. Since 2015 they have been donating 1% of all sales to causes and organizations that support sustainability and are actively working towards becoming 100% responsible (using recycled materials, renewable energy and zero waste).
