Whether you’re coming from Vancouver or Calgary, this lodge offers a serene escape that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Getting There: Driving Directions and Parks Pass

From Vancouver

  1. Take Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) eastbound.

  2. Continue through the Fraser Valley, past Hope, and into the Canadian Rockies.

  3. After passing through Golden, BC, drive approximately 30 minutes to Field, BC.

  4. Turn onto Emerald Lake Road and follow it for about 5 km until you reach the lodge.

    Driving Time: Approximately 8.5 to 9 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

From Calgary

  1. Take Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) westbound.

  2. Drive through Banff National Park and into Yoho National Park.

  3. After passing Lake Louise, continue for about 30 minutes to Field, BC.

  4. Turn onto Emerald Lake Road and follow it for about 5 km until you reach the lodge.

    Driving Time: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

Parks Pass Requirement:
Since Emerald Lake Lodge is located within Yoho National Park, you’ll need a Parks Canada Pass to enter. Daily and annual passes are available, and you can purchase them online or at park gates.

Shuttle Service:
For guests staying at the lodge, a complimentary shuttle is available to transport you and your luggage from the parking lot to the lodge. This is a nice touch, especially if you’re traveling with heavy bags or visiting in winter.

The lodge’s restaurant is a highlight of every stay. The menu features locally sourced ingredients, and the dishes are expertly prepared. Here are some of our favourites:

  • Elk: A must-try! The elk dish is tender, flavourful, and perfectly cooked.

  • Breakfast: The breakfast buffet is fantastic, with a variety of options to fuel up for a day of hiking.

  • Wine Menu: The lodge has an excellent selection of wines, with options to pair perfectly with your meal.

Hot Tub and Campfire

After a long day of hiking, the stainless steel hot tub is the perfect place to relax. Soaking in the warm water while surrounded by mountain views is pure bliss. In the evenings, the lodge lights a campfire near the lake, where guests can gather to roast marshmallows and share stories under the stars.

Emerald Lake is perfect for canoeing, and the lodge offers rentals for guests. Paddling across the crystal-clear waters is a peaceful and unforgettable experience. If you prefer to stay on land, the shoreline walk around the lake is an easy and scenic way to take in the views.

Hamilton Lake

  • Distance: 12 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: 800 meters

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

  • Details: This trail takes you through lush forests and alpine meadows to a stunning glacial lake. The views of the surrounding peaks are incredible.

Paget Peak

  • Distance: 7 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: 550 meters

  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • Trailhead: The hike begins at the Sherbrooke Lake parking lot, located just off the Trans-Canada Highway near Wapta Lake.

  • Trail Description:
    The trail starts with a steady climb through a dense forest, offering shade and a peaceful atmosphere. As you ascend, the trees begin to thin, revealing stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The final stretch involves a steep but manageable climb to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Emerald Lake, Sherbrooke Lake, and the Wapta Icefields. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Lake Louise!

  • Best Time to Hike: Summer and early fall are ideal, as the trail is usually snow-free from July to September.

Roadside Attractions

  • Natural Bridge: A short drive from the lodge, this natural rock formation spans the Kicking Horse River. It’s a quick stop but well worth the visit.

  • Takakkaw Falls: One of Canada’s tallest waterfalls, Takakkaw Falls is a must-see. The short walk to the base of the falls is easy and offers incredible photo opportunities.

History of Emerald Lake Lodge

Emerald Lake Lodge has a rich history dating back to 1902, when it was first built by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Originally designed as a retreat for railway passengers, the lodge has since been restored and expanded while maintaining its historic charm. Today, it’s a beloved destination for travellers seeking a peaceful escape in the Rockies.
