Our Favourite Stay in Kananaskis: Kananaskis Mountain Lodge

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge by Marriott has become our go-to escape for mountain adventures in every season. Over the past three years, we’ve stayed here in spring, summer, and during the magical Christmas season—and each visit has been unforgettable. From the stunning views to the thoughtful amenities, this lodge has everything you need for a perfect mountain getaway.

Why We Keep Coming Back

A Mountain Retreat Like No Other

Tucked away in Kananaskis Country, the lodge feels like a hidden gem. Did you know this property hosted the G8 Summit in 2002? World leaders gathered here to discuss global issues, and it’s easy to see why they chose this location. The lodge’s serene setting, surrounded by towering peaks and lush forests, creates a sense of peace and seclusion that’s hard to beat.

Our Favourite Room: The Loft

We always book a loft room, and it’s become a non-negotiable for us. The extra space and second washroom are a game-changer, especially when travelling with kids. When Aspen was little, we’d set up her pack-and-play in the upstairs washroom shower (sorry for the weirdness, housekeeping!). Now, we love waking up to the sun streaming through the two-story windows, casting golden light over the mountains. It’s pure magic.

Kid-Friendly Perks

One of the reasons we love this lodge so much is how welcoming it is for families. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Kids Zone: Daily drop-off programs keep little ones entertained with crafts, games, and activities.

  • Heritage Nanny Service: On-site paid childcare means parents can enjoy some alone time, whether it’s for a spa day or a romantic dinner.

  • Kids Eat Free: At both the breakfast and dinner buffets, kids under 5 eat free, and older kids get discounted rates.

  • Thoughtful Touches: The staff go above and beyond, from serving kids’ water in paper coffee cups with lids to keeping crayons well-stocked.

The Nordic Spa: A Dream Come True

The Kananskis Nordic Spa is one of our favourite amenities. This adults-only oasis is the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventure. Here’s what to expect:

  • Thermal Experience: Rotate between hot pools, cold plunges, and steam rooms to rejuvenate your body.

  • Relaxation Areas: Cozy up in the outdoor loungers or by the fire pits with a warm blanket and a cup of herbal tea.

  • Massage Treatments: Book a massage or body treatment for the ultimate relaxation.

Pro tip: If you’re visiting with kids, take advantage of the on-site childcare to enjoy some quality time at the spa.

Family Fun at the Pool

Aspen’s absolute favourite part of the lodge is the pool. With slides, water play areas, and a shallow kiddie pool, it’s a paradise for little ones. We’ve spent countless hours here, and it’s always a highlight of our stay.

Winter Activities

In the winter, the lodge transforms into a snowy playground:

  • Sledding: Grab a toboggan and hit the hills nearby.

  • Skiing and Snowboarding at Nakiska: Just a short drive away, Nakiska is the perfect place for families to hit the slopes. It’s where we first took Aspen snowboarding, and the magic carpet on the learning hill made it so easy for her to get started.
