Gear Review: Darn Tough Trail Running Socks

When it comes to ultra-distance running, gear can make or break your race. Socks, in particular, are one of those unsung heroes that don’t get enough credit—until they fail. For Matt, who’s training for the Canyons Endurance Race (a grueling 100-mile event in April), finding the right socks has been a journey of trial and error. Enter Darn Tough, a brand known for its durability, comfort, and unbeatable lifetime warranty. Darn Tough sent Matt a bundle of their trail running socks to test this fall, and after months of rigorous training, the results are in: these socks are a game-changer.

The Socks

Darn Tough provided a variety of sock heights, including the No Show Tab, Quarter Crew, and Micro Crew. All of the socks are no-cushion, ultra-lightweight, making them ideal for distance running where every gram counts. Matt has been putting these socks through the wringer as part of his training plan with Jeremy Rolle, his coach from Mile 2 Marathon. With a weekly mileage of 100+ kilometers (including daily runs of 8-10 km and long weekend runs), these socks have been tested in every condition imaginable.

Performance

The standout feature of Darn Tough socks is their durability. Matt has been notorious for wearing through socks at an alarming rate (let’s just say our sock budget has tripled since he started running ultras). But after months of consistent use, the Darn Tough socks show minimal signs of wear. They’ve held up through muddy trails, rocky terrain, and countless miles on the road.

Another critical factor for ultra-runners is blister prevention. Ill-fitting or low-quality socks can lead to hot spots and blisters, which can derail a race. Thankfully, Matt has had zero blister issues with Darn Tough socks. The seamless design and snug fit ensure there’s no slipping or bunching, even during long, sweaty runs.

Favorites

Out of the variety pack, Matt’s favourite pair is the Men’s Bolt Micro Crew Ultra-Lightweight Running Sock. The Micro Crew height hits the sweet spot—providing a little extra coverage without feeling bulky. The fit is true to size, and when paired with his Norda 001s, it’s a match made in trail-running heaven.

About Darn Tough

Darn Tough is a Vermont-based company that takes pride in crafting high-performance socks entirely in the USA. What sets them apart is their unconditional lifetime warranty. If your socks ever wear out, Darn Tough will replace them—no questions asked. It’s a testament to their confidence in the quality of their products.

Their socks are made with Merino wool, which is naturally moisture-wicking, odor-resistant, and temperature-regulating. This makes them perfect for long-distance running, where comfort and performance are non-negotiable.

As Matt continues his training for the Canyons Endurance Race, Darn Tough socks have become a staple in his gear lineup. They’ve proven themselves to be durable, comfortable, and blister-free—everything an ultra-runner could ask for. Whether you’re tackling a 100-mile race or just logging daily miles, Darn Tough socks are worth every penny.

Matt will be wearing his Darn Tough socks for all his upcoming events, and we’re confident they’ll carry him through to the finish line. If you’re in the market for running socks that can handle the distance, look no further than Darn Tough.

Pro Tip: If you’re new to Darn Tough, start with the Men’s Run Variety 3-Pack to find your perfect fit and style. Trust us, your feet will thank you.
