Gear Review: Norda 001 Trail Running Shoes

When it comes to trail running shoes, the Norda 001 has become an absolute favourite for both Matt and me over the past two years. These shoes have been put through the wringer—literally hundreds of kilometers, rugged terrain, and some of the most challenging races and hikes we’ve tackled. Whether you’re a seasoned ultra-runner or just dipping your toes into trail running, the Norda 001 is a shoe that delivers on performance, durability, and style.

The Shoes

The Norda 001 is a premium trail running shoe designed for runners who demand the best. Matt has two pairs: his daily trainers, which have seen over a year and a half of heavy use (we’re talking 100+ kilometers per week), and a fresh pair reserved for races and big events. I’ve been rocking the Ciele Collaboration pair for about two years, and they’ve become my go-to for both trail runs and hikes.

Performance

Let’s start with durability. Matt’s first pair of Norda 001s has logged an insane number of kilometers and is still holding up strong. While the front lamination seal has started to come apart after a year and a half (which is expected given the mileage), the shoes still feel supportive and comfortable. His second pair carried him through a grueling 70km event with 4,000+ meters of elevation gain in just under 12 hours. Despite the punishing terrain, his feet felt comfortable the entire time—a testament to the shoe’s design and construction.

For me, the Norda 001 strikes the perfect balance between lightweight feel and cushioned support. They’re incredibly responsive on technical trails, and I’ve found them equally great for long hikes. The shoes are designed to handle everything from rocky descents to muddy climbs, and they’ve never let me down.

Tech Features

What makes the Norda 001 stand out is its cutting-edge technology:

  • Dyneema® Upper: Known as the "world’s strongest fiber," Dyneema® is lightweight, durable, and highly resistant to abrasion. This makes the shoe incredibly tough while keeping it light.

  • Vibram® Litebase Outsole: The outsole provides exceptional grip on all types of terrain, from loose gravel to wet rocks. The Litebase technology also reduces weight without sacrificing durability.

  • Biomechanical Mapping: The shoe’s design is tailored to the natural movement of the foot, offering support where you need it most.

  • Sustainable Design: Norda is committed to sustainability, using eco-friendly materials and processes wherever possible.

Fit and Sizing

One important note: size up from your regular shoe size. The Norda 001 runs a bit small, so check the size chart before purchasing. We recommend pairing them with no-cushion or ultra-light cushion socks for the best fit. Matt loves wearing his with the Darn Tough Micro Crew Ultra-Lightweight Running Socks (check out our full review of Darn Tough socks here).

After two years of testing, the Norda 001 has earned its place as our favourite trail running shoe. Whether you’re logging daily miles, tackling an ultra-marathon, or hitting the trails for a hike, these shoes deliver unmatched performance and durability.

I’m personally excited to try the Norda 002 next, especially with the new colorways that just launched.

If you’re looking to get into trail running, the Norda is a fantastic place to start. For more tips on trail running, check out our guide here.

See you on the trails!
