Just Breathe Wellness Spa in Abbotsford, BC

All

There’s something special about revisiting a place that holds all your childhood memories. For me, that’s Bradner—a little community in Abbotsford where I grew up in the ‘90s. Summers were spent biking and rollerblading down quiet streets, stopping at the corner store for 5-cent candies, and soaking up that small-town magic.

So when I came across Just Breathe Wellness Spa on Instagram (thanks to a post from Five Acres Farm), I knew I had to check it out. Just down the road from my childhood home, it felt like the perfect way to reconnect with my roots while trying something new.

Lately, Matt and I have been dipping our toes (literally) into the world of cold plunging. With his 100-mile race coming up in April, hydrotherapy has become a key part of our routine, helping with recovery and keeping us balanced and focused.

Just Breathe Spa, Abbotsford BC

A Quick Dive into Hydrotherapy’s History

Hydrotherapy—the practice of using water for healing—has been around for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians built elaborate bathhouses and thermal springs to promote relaxation, detoxification, and overall wellness. By the 19th century, hydrotherapy had gained serious traction in Europe as a go-to treatment for various ailments. Today, it’s celebrated for its ability to reduce stress, improve circulation, and support both mental and physical recovery.

At the heart of hydrotherapy is the powerful combo of heat and cold. The sauna’s warmth relaxes your muscles, boosts circulation, and helps release toxins through sweat. On the other hand, the cold plunge is like a wake-up call for your body—it reduces inflammation, lifts your mood, and sharpens mental clarity. Together, they create this incredible cycle of rejuvenation that leaves you feeling refreshed and revitalized. It’s like hitting the reset button, and honestly, it’s hard to beat.

Our Experience at Just Breathe Wellness Spa

From the moment we arrived at Just Breathe, we were struck by the thoughtful details and serene atmosphere. Owners Amanda and Ryan have created a space that feels both luxurious and welcoming. Nestled in the beautiful landscape, the spa offers a perfect blend of nature and comfort.

Here’s what you can expect during your visit:

Amenities at Just Breathe

  • Cold Plunges: Three cold plunge pools await, offering the invigorating benefits of cold therapy. Whether you’re looking to boost circulation, reduce inflammation, or simply wake up your senses, the cold plunges are a refreshing escape.

  • Relaxation Area: A calming seating area equipped with lounge chairs, a gas fire and a Bluetooth speaker allows you to relax and soak in the peaceful ambiance.

  • Outdoor Shower: Not ready to take the plunge? The outdoor shower offers an alternate option for your cold water experience.

  • Private Bathroom: Indoors, you’ll find a flushing toilet, indoor shower, and changing space for added convenience.

The Recommended Hydrotherapy Cycle

Amanda guided us through the recommended hydrotherapy cycle, which alternates between heat and cold for maximum benefits. She also shared some great tips, like starting with the cold plunge if you’re hesitant about it. This worked well for Matt, who eventually managed to stay in the cold plunge for up to 5 minutes! For me, I preferred heating up first—overheating, in fact—until I was craving the cold. It gave me that extra push to get in, even though I struggled to stay in as long as Matt. It’s all about finding what works for you, and I’m excited to keep working on my cold plunge tolerance!

Here’s the cycle we followed:

  1. Cold Plunge (1-3 minutes): Start with the cold to wake up your body and mind.

  2. Sauna (15-20 minutes): Warm up in the sauna to relax your muscles and improve circulation.

  3. Cold Plunge (3-5 minutes): Return to the cold plunge for an invigorating finish.

  4. Rest (10-15 minutes): Sit in the calming relaxation area to let your body adjust and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

  5. Repeat: Cycle through the sauna and cold plunge 3-4 times for a full hydrotherapy experience.
