Remote Floating Sauna in Tofino, BC

Last December, Matt and I embarked on a little winter adventure to Tofino, one of our favourite places on Vancouver Island. We stayed at the cozy Long Beach Lodge Resort, but the highlight of our trip was undoubtedly our afternoon at the Remote Floating Sauna operated by Tofino Resort + Marina. It was an experience that combined relaxation, adventure, and a touch of magic—perfect for a winter getaway.

The Journey to the Floating Sauna

The adventure began with a short boat ride from the marina to the floating sauna, which is anchored in a secluded spot surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Clayoquot Sound. Even in December, the scenery was stunning—think snow-dusted evergreens, calm waters, and the promise of tranquility. The sauna itself is a beautifully crafted wooden structure, floating peacefully on the water, and it felt like stepping into a Nordic dream.

The Hydrotherapy Cycle: Heat, Cold, Repeat

One of the unique aspects of the floating sauna is the hydrotherapy cycle, a practice that alternates between hot and cold therapy to invigorate the body and mind. Here’s how it works:

  1. Heat: You start by warming up in the sauna, which is heated by a wood-burning stove. The warmth seeps into your muscles, melting away any tension.

  2. Cold Plunge: Once you’re nice and toasty, it’s time for the exhilarating part—jumping into the frigid ocean! There’s a ladder that leads directly into the water, and while it’s definitely a shock to the system, it’s also incredibly refreshing.

  3. Rest: After the cold plunge, you return to the sauna to warm up again, completing the cycle.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical about jumping into the ocean in December. But the sauna was so warm and inviting that I eventually worked up the courage to take the plunge. Climbing down that ladder into the icy waters was a rush, and the feeling of warmth when I returned to the sauna was pure bliss.

A Perfect Afternoon: Snow, Lunch, and Serenity

The team at Tofino Resort + Marina had thought of everything. They left us with a picnic lunch and beverages, and both the sauna and the outdoor fire pit were already lit when we arrived. The lunch was absolutely delicious—fresh, locally sourced, and perfect for refueling after our hydrotherapy sessions.

As if the experience wasn’t magical enough, it started to snow while we were out there. Watching the snowflakes fall over the water while we relaxed by the fire was something straight out of a storybook.

Wildlife Spotting (or Not)

On the boat ride back, we kept our eyes peeled for wildlife. Tofino is known for its abundant marine life, and it’s not uncommon to spot sea otters, seals, or even whales in the area. While we didn’t have any luck that day, the possibility of encountering these creatures always adds an extra layer of excitement to any Tofino adventure.

Dinner at Shelter: A Bittersweet Memory

After wrapping up at the sauna, we headed to Shelter Restaurant for dinner. Little did we know, this would be our last time visiting their old location before the tragic fire that occurred earlier this year. Shelter has always been our go-to spot in Tofino, and this visit was no exception.

We started with their famous chowder, which is hands-down the best we’ve ever had. For mains, Matt had the halibut, perfectly cooked and served with seasonal vegetables, while I opted for the steak, which was tender and flavourful. Every bite was a reminder of why we love this place so much.

Morning Coffee at Rhino

The next morning, we stopped by Rhino Coffee House to grab some coffee and donuts for the road. Their donuts are legendary—fluffy, fresh, and just the right amount of sweet. We also stocked up on their espresso beans to bring a little piece of Tofino back home with us.

Our trip to the Remote Floating Sauna was one of those experiences that stays with you long after you’ve returned home. It was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and connection with nature. If you’re planning a trip to Tofino, I can’t recommend this experience enough—whether it’s winter or summer, it’s truly unforgettable.

Until next time, Tofino!
