If you’re looking for a backpacking trip that combines grueling climbs, alpine lakes, and jaw-dropping views, Mount MacFarlane in Chilliwack, BC, should be at the top of your list. We tackled this trail in late August, and it was the perfect time to go—wildflowers were still blooming, the weather was warm, and the bugs were manageable. Plus, the alpine lakes were just cold enough to make a post-hike dip feel like a true accomplishment.

This hike is not for the faint of heart, especially if you’re carrying a full overnight pack. But trust me, the effort is worth it.

Here’s everything you need to know about backpacking to Mount MacFarlane, from the trailhead to the summit.

Trail Overview

  • Distance (round trip): 24 km

  • Elevation gain: 1,600 meters

  • Difficulty: Challenging

  • Time: 2-3 days (or a very long day hike)

  • Best time to go: Late July to September

Driving Directions from Vancouver

From Vancouver, take Highway 1 east toward Chilliwack. Take exit 119 for Chilliwack Lake Road and follow it for about 40 km. The trailhead is well-marked and located on the left side of the road, just past Post Creek. Parking is limited, so arrive early—especially on weekends.

Note on parking security: Unfortunately, break-ins are common along Chilliwack Lake Road. Leave nothing valuable in your car, and consider leaving your car unlocked.

 

Mount MacFarlane and Lower Pierce Lake


The Trail:

Trailhead to Lower Pierce Lake (8 km, ~900 m elevation gain)

The trail starts in the forest, with a steady climb through dense trees and over roots and rocks. The first 4 km are a warm-up, but once you hit the Pierce Creek waterfall, the real work begins. The trail becomes steeper, with switchbacks that seem to go on forever. This section is tough with a heavy pack, but the sound of the rushing creek keeps you company.

As you near Lower Pierce Lake, the forest begins to thin, and you’ll catch glimpses of the surrounding peaks. The lake itself is a beautiful reward—a serene spot surrounded by trees and mountains.

If you’re looking for an easier option, this is a great place to camp. However, we pushed on to Upper Pierce Lake for the views.

Lower Pierce Lake to Upper Pierce Lake (2 km, ~300 m elevation gain)

This section is short but steep, with rocky terrain and a few scrambly sections. The trail winds through alpine meadows filled with wildflowers (in late summer) and offers stunning views of Lower Pierce Lake below.

Upper Pierce Lake is where we set up camp, and it was worth every ounce of effort. The lake is nestled in a dramatic alpine bowl, with Mount MacFarlane towering above. The sunsets and sunrises here are nothing short of spectacular, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange.

Pro tip: Take a dip in the lake if you dare—it’s freezing, even in late August, but incredibly refreshing after a long day of hiking.

Upper Pierce Lake to the Summit (2 km, ~400 m elevation gain)

The final push to the summit of Mount MacFarlane is steep and rugged. The trail is less defined here, with loose scree and a few exposed sections. As you climb, the views just keep getting better—you can see both Pierce Lakes below, as well as the surrounding peaks and valleys.

The summit is a rocky outcrop with 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Mount Baker in Washington and the peaks of the North Cascades. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a well-earned snack and soak in the beauty of the Chilliwack backcountry.

Alternative Options

  • Camp at Lower Pierce Lake: If you’re not up for the steep climb to Upper Pierce, Lower Pierce Lake is a great alternative. It’s still a beautiful spot, and it shaves off some of the elevation gain.

  • Day Hike Mount MacFarlane: Yes, it’s possible to do this as a day hike! We did it in 2023 with our two-year-old daughter (she rode in a carrier, of course). It’s a long day—plan for 10-12 hours—but totally doable if you’re short on time.

  • Hike Pierce Mountain: If you have extra energy, consider hiking nearby Pierce Mountain. It’s more of a goat trail, but the views are incredible.

What to Expect: Trail Conditions and Challenges

This trail is hard. The elevation gain is relentless, and carrying a backpack adds an extra layer of difficulty. The terrain varies from forested paths to rocky scrambles, so sturdy footwear is a must.

Late August is an ideal time to go—the snow is mostly melted, the wildflowers are in bloom, and the weather is generally stable. That said, always check the forecast and be prepared for sudden changes in mountain weather.
