Sunset Hike to Lady Peak in Chilliwack, BC

If you're looking for a rewarding after-work hike with stunning views, Lady Peak in Chilliwack is a fantastic option, especially in September. The weather was perfect—warm enough during the day but still comfortable after the sun went down. The long days meant we had plenty of time to enjoy the sunset without rushing and the wildflowers were A-MAZ-ING!

Getting There

We met up in Chilliwack and carpooled up the Chilliwack River Valley. From Vancouver, the drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Here are the driving directions:

  1. Head east on Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) toward Chilliwack.

  2. Take Exit 119 for Vedder Road and follow signs for Chilliwack Lake Road.

  3. Continue on Chilliwack Lake Road, which eventually turns into Chilliwack River Valley Road.

  4. Turn left onto Chipmunk Creek Forest Service Road (FSR). This is where the road gets rough—high clearance and 4x4 are highly recommended.

  5. Follow Chipmunk Creek FSR for about 8 km until you reach the Cheam Trailhead parking lot.

The road was bumpy and rocky, but KJ, made it feel like a breeze in his Jeep. He drove way faster than I would have dared, but it was all part of the adventure!

The Hike

We arrived at the Cheam Trailhead parking lot and quickly geared up. In my excitement, I forgot my phone in the car and had to run back to grab it. I was hiking with two strangers I’d met on Instagram after-all (sorry, Mom!), and while I didn’t have cell service, I’m so glad I went back for my phone—the photos were incredible!

Trail Stats:

  • Distance: ~10 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: ~900 meters

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (due to steep sections and a scramble near the top)

  • Time: 2-4 hours round trip (depending on pace and stops)

The trail starts by following a creek and passing Spoon Lake, a serene little spot surrounded by trees. The bugs weren’t bad, which was a relief. After gaining some elevation through the forest, we veered off the main Cheam Peak trail and headed straight up the mountain toward Lady Peak. The climb was steep, and I struggled to keep up with Eric and KJ, who seemed part mountain goat.

Once we reached the ridge, the views were absolutely breathtaking. We had plenty of time before sunset, so KJ coached me through the final scramble to the summit while Eric ran ahead to explore. Watching the sun set behind Cheam Peak, casting a golden glow over Jones Lake below was pretty special

Tips for Sunset Hikes

  1. Start Early: Even though days are long in September, give yourself plenty of time to reach the summit and enjoy the sunset without rushing.

  2. Bring Layers: Temperatures can drop quickly after the sun sets, so pack a warm jacket and extra layers.

  3. Headlamp: Even if you plan to finish before dark, always bring a headlamp just in case.

  4. Check the Weather: Clear skies are essential for a good sunset view. Keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared to turn back if conditions change.

  5. Hike with Others: Sunset hikes are magical, but it’s safer to go with a group, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the trail.

The Descent

We started heading down before the sun fully set, and the descent felt surprisingly quick. We made it back to the trailhead without needing our headlamps, which was a win in my book. The drive back down Chipmunk Creek FSR was uneventful, and we capped off the night with a quick stop for McNuggets—because what’s a hike without a post-adventure snack?

Hiking Lady Peak for sunset was an unforgettable experience. The combination of golden hour light, panoramic views, and great company made it a perfect evening. If you’re up for a challenge and want to witness one of the most stunning sunsets in the Chilliwack area, Lady Peak should definitely be on your list. Just make sure you’re prepared for the steep climb and rough road!
