Contralto Peak, Downton Creek

Overview

Contralto Peak in the Downton Creek area is a hidden gem in the South Chilcotin Mountains, offering a challenging but immensely rewarding hike. This adventure combines rugged 4WD access, alpine lakes, and breathtaking ridge walks with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Despite some road access challenges in recent years, this hike remains one of my all-time favorites, even in 2025.

Getting There

From Chilliwack:

  • Drive east on Highway 1, then merge onto Highway 97 north toward Cache Creek.

  • Continue through Cache Creek and onto Highway 99 toward Lillooet.

  • Just before Lillooet, turn left onto Downton Creek Road (Forest Service Road).

From Whistler/Pemberton:

  • Take Highway 99 north through Pemberton and past Duffey Lake.

  • Continue toward Lillooet and turn right onto Downton Creek Road (FSR).

Cottonwood Campground

Cottonwood Campground:

  • Located near the start of Downton Creek FSR, this campground is first-come, first-served (FCFS).

  • Amenities include basic campsites, pit toilets, and access to the river. Fees are minimal (approximately $10–15 per night as of 2020).

  • This campground served as an excellent base for our adventure, offering everything we needed for a night of car camping.

Road Access to the Trailhead

From Cottonwood Campground, we turned left onto Downton Creek FSR and began the steep climb. The road gains over 1,000 meters in elevation, starting at 680 meters and reaching over 1,750 meters at the parking area.

  • 2020: The road was narrow, overgrown, and had some missing boards on the bridge, but it was manageable in a high-clearance 4WD vehicle (we used a Jeep). The steep cliffs and narrow sections were nerve-wracking but passable.

  • 2022 Update: After the 2021 floods, the road was still accessible, even in a Toyota RAV4, though the alder was thick and overgrown.

  • 2023 Update: The road was blocked off at the lower bridge, making the trailhead inaccessible.

  • September 2024 Update: The barricades were temporarily removed, and the road was passable again, though the bridge remains unreplaced. Closure will be reinstated at an unspecified date.

Upper Holly Lake

The Hike

  • Distance: 9.0 kms

  • Elevation: 862 m

  • Time: 4-6 hours

Trailhead to Holly Lake:

The trail begins in an old cut block and weaves through young, regenerating trees. The route to Holly Lake is easy to follow and offers a pleasant warm-up. Bugs were virtually non-existent in September, a major perk of hiking at this time of year.

As we climbed, we were treated to stunning views of the surrounding peaks: Soprano, Contralto, Shroeder, Linus, and Faulty Tower. After about an hour of hiking, we reached the breathtaking Holly Lake. The crystal-clear water sparkled in the sunlight, and a few groups were camped along the shore. This would be an incredible spot for an overnight stay.

Upper Holly Lake

Upper Holly Lake to Contralto Peak:

Beyond Holly Lake, the trail disappears, and route-finding becomes essential. We traveled around the far side of the lake and chose a route up between Soprano and Contralto Peaks, staying closer to the Contralto side.

Gaining the ridge

The climb to the ridge was steep but manageable, with one notable crux that tested my nerves (I’m not a fan of heights!). Once on the ridge, the views were nothing short of spectacular. The winds were fierce, but we spent over an hour soaking in the scenery.

Descent:

Rather than retracing our steps, we opted for a different route down to avoid the crux. This turned out to be equally challenging, if not worse. We followed the ridge toward Soprano Peak but decided against summiting. Instead, we descended a loose scree slope on the Soprano side of the ridge and made our way into the boulder field. Once in the boulders we continued down and wrapped our way around the opposite side the of lake back to the main trail.

Contralto Peak is a hike that stays with you long after you’ve left. The combination of rugged access, stunning alpine scenery, and a sense of accomplishment makes it a standout adventure. Even in 2025, after countless hikes, this one remains my favourite. If you’re up for the challenge, Downton Creek and Contralto Peak are well worth the effort.

Practical Tips for Future Hikers

Road Conditions:

  • Always check the latest updates on road access before heading out. The status of Downton Creek FSR can change due to flooding, maintenance, or closures.

  • A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is essential, especially if the road is overgrown or damaged.

Trail Navigation:

  • While the trail to Holly Lake is well-defined, the route beyond requires solid route-finding skills. Bring a map, GPS, or a reliable navigation app.

  • Be prepared for steep, loose terrain, especially on the descent. Trekking poles can be a lifesaver.

Camping:

  • Holly Lake is an ideal spot for an overnight stay. If you plan to camp, ensure you follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the area’s pristine beauty.

  • There are no facilities at the lake, so bring all necessary gear, including a bear canister for food storage.

Weather and Gear:

  • The weather in the alpine can change rapidly. Pack layers, including a windproof jacket, as the ridge can be extremely windy.

  • Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are a must for the rocky and uneven terrain.

Safety:

  • Let someone know your plans and expected return time, as the area is remote and cell service is unreliable.

  • Be cautious of exposure on the ridge, especially if you’re uncomfortable with heights.

Contralto Peak stands out for its rugged, remote beauty and the sense of accomplishment it offers. Unlike many well-trodden trails, this area feels untouched and wild, providing a true backcountry experience. The views from the ridge are exceptional, with numerous lakes and peaks creating a dramatic and expansive landscape. The combination of challenging terrain, stunning scenery, and solitude makes this hike unforgettable.

Contralto Peak is a demanding but highly rewarding hike. From the steep, rugged drive up the FSR to the breathtaking views from the ridge, every part of the journey is memorable. This hike is ideal for experienced adventurers seeking a challenging and remote alpine experience.

If you’re planning to visit, ensure you’re well-prepared, stay safe, and take the time to appreciate the natural beauty of this unique area. It’s a hike that leaves a lasting impression and is well worth the effort.
